About this deal

TikTok sensation Cynthia Murphy's debut The Last One to Die has been hailed "Point Horror for a new generation", winning the Redhill Trust Book Award and Lancashire Book of the Year 2022. But that last part… I am sorry, so far the book was fantastic, awesome, WOW, but then you decided to add the little sister in the mix? While SHE FREAKING KNEW that things just weren’t going right? What is up with that? It just didn’t make sense, it was dumb. I am sorry. But I would have rather seen our trio fix things instead of this. This is the start of a story that will keep you guessing. I really loved the writing style. It flowed easily for me. Characters were believable and I grew to care about what happened to them. In this book we meet Niamh, a girl who is very eager to have the summer of her life. Doing a drama course. Do volunteerstuff for the course. Make friends. Walk around elegant London. But things go sour from the start when the girl who gets her room (apparently the girl had a fear for heights) gets murdered and Niamh finds her. And from that moment there were some quiet moments, but for most it was just a rollercoaster. Because creepy things happen left and right and it seems that Niamh is cursed. I was totally invested in the story. Was Niamh the link? Was Niamh cursed? Was something else spooky going on? I just wanted to hug this girl so badly throughout the story. Because at school most people are avoiding her due to what is happening around her. And then there is the whole creepy person who is stalking her and other girls.

Last One to Die is my love letter to all of the horror books and movies I inhaled as a teenager. There was something about the thrill of being scared, but also be in control of what was causing that fear, that I loved – and still do! So I set out to write something scary and, most importantly, fun. It’s a creepy little slice of escapism from the modern world.I am happy that the author told us how Niamh was pronounced. I am sorry, but I just don’t know any Irish people. And I live in Dutch-speaking country. XD I was already prepared to google it and see what was up, but I am happy I didn’t have to do that. The story was written well with some fantasy elements (I didn’t like that side but it was a good idea) We spoke to some of your favourite authors and illustrators to find out what books they’d recommend for children starting school in September. Whether your child is nervous about making friends or struggling to build… Last one to die" exceeded my expectations, transforming from a classic slasher mystery into an emotionally loaded and eerie novel. Anticipating Murphy's signature bloody and big plot twists, I was surprised to find this one bringing us readers a broader range of emotions to feel when the killer was revealed. The main character, Niamh, is coming to London for a 6 week long drama course she dreamed of for a long time. It’s one of the most prestigious programs in Great Britain. Soon after she first gets to London strange things and murder start to happen though and somehow Niamh always founds herself always in the middle of it.

It’s basically like a point horror book for modern readers and that might sound dismissive, but it’s honestly the highest praise I could give it and I LOVED IT! Sweet Valley Thrillers and Point Horror were my gateway drugs into reading adult books as my aunty saw me reading them & then gave me some of her Stephen King & James Herbert (and James Patterson) books to read aged 11/12 and that was it, I was hooked. I never stopped reading “kids books”, I just added adult books in and I think that’s why I still enjoy any age fiction nowadays. Determined to make it through her Drama Course, Niamh is placed at the Victorian Museum to put her drama skills to the test, and there she meets Tommy: he’s kind, fun, attentive, and really hot! . . . Nonetheless, there's something eerie about the museum. The plot of the book is gripping and well-paced. I loved how it wove in local mythology and history. I was constantly guessing and changing my mind about how it was all going to end! Welcome to the reality game show that'll scare you to death! Have you got what it takes to last the night? If magic is thrown into a story, it has to either be a defining role or weaved well into the world-building so that there is a sense of believability of its place in the mystery. Otherwise, the resolution just feels lazy and unfinished. I personally wouldn’t have compared it to One of Us is Lying or This Lie Will Kill You but I guess that’s because they’re ya murder mysteries (but not very enjoyable ones in my opinion). I’d say if you like Dawn Kurtigah, Kat Ellis, Katherine Foxfield & Juno Dawson then you’ll love this book. What do you do when you go for a summer course and find out people are dying left and right… and they all look similarly to you? I loved reading about the museum and would have loved to visit it. It sounds like the kind of museum I would enjoy a ton! The Germans kept watch on the American soldier who suddenly rose to his feet and charged toward the machine-gun nest with his fixed bayonet. Gunther’s comrades yelled at him to stop as did the bewildered Germans in broken English. Didn’t he know the war was minutes from its end? If he heard the pleas, Gunther ignored them.
